Data Fusion and Visual Analytics

Data collected by IGERT-TEECH will serve as a fundamental building block in the knowledge discovery process. However, to cope with its complexity and detail, a new generation of cultural analytics tools and infrastructure will help researchers from different disciplines to collaboratively view, interrogate, correlate and manipulate data at a wide range of scales and resolutions. To accomplish this, we are enabling data exploration, hypothesis generation and data analysis by means of interactive visual data interrogation, and the solutions can be equally useful to the archaeologist in the field and to the. Combined with the appropriate visual analytics infrastructure and tools, rapid visual comparison of theory with experimental data will be possible, enabling interdisciplinary teams of engineers to swiftly validate and further develop theory and practice. Visual analytics techniques have to:

To support analytical reasoning through interactive visual data exploration, a closed-loop interactive steering pipeline allows the user to probe and fuse the data in real time. The user will be able to manipulate parameters or operators interactively, receive direct visual validation of the results and visually correlate multiple data sources simultaneously.

Background

The visual and interactive fusion of large-scale models is a paradigm that has only become feasible due to recent advances in acquisition, processing, networking and display technology, coupled with scientific workflow strategies. A set of visual analytics tools and workspaces allow users to conduct research individually, as co-located groups or as spatially distributed groups. Visual and cultural analytics can allow us to move beyond standard repositories and retrospective analysis, effectively enabling immediate mode, multi-modal interaction with all data sources via visualization, and doing so will provide a new mechanism for data fusion, interrogation and knowledge integration. Decision-making will be enabled by the presented and pervasively accessible information allowing researchers to literally see the bigger picture and to act on it.
