Mike Bianco

PhD Student, Scripps Institution of Oceanography

After graduating from Purdue University with a Bachelor’s in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering in 2007, Mike Bianco worked as a NASA contractor at Pratt and Whitney Rocketdyne in Los Angeles. At Rocketdyne, Mike helped develop rocket engine hardware for manned space flight. However, he always wanted to apply his expertise in math and science to the advancement of the natural sciences. His deep appreciation for the ocean led him to find the Scripps Institution of Oceanography (SIO) at UCSD. In the Fall of 2012, Mike started as a Ph.D. student with Jules Jaffe in the Jaffe Lab for Underwater Imaging at SIO. Mike is interested in using the Jaffe Lab underwater laser line scanner system for the study of coral reefs as well as other benthic habitats.
